Prenatal Therapy & Postpartum Mental Health
Pregnancy is a time of great transition. You want this to be a time of great joy and excitement. However, many women are surprised by the range of different emotions they feel. For some women, including those with a history of infertility or pregnancy loss, or who are experiencing medical complications, pregnancy can be a time of great anxiety. Getting help for these issues can help you and your baby prenatally, and can often reduce the chance of problems in the postpartum period.
After having a baby it is common to experience a loss of independence, identity, relationship changes, attachment concerns, isolation, questions about returning to work, body image issues, and a wide range of emotional highs and lows. New moms need to feel supported during this time.
We now know many new mothers (1 in 7) will suffer from a postpartum mood or anxiety disorder within a year of giving birth. Reproductive mental health issues can actually develop during and after pregnancy, including depression, generalized anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder. These disorders are very treatable and are here to help you to understand your experience and to help you feel better.
Fourth Trimester check-IN
As a first time parent or not, many have found that there are very little resources and support for parents postpartum. Newborns will have multiple wellness visits to make sure they are healthy and developing well, while moms will have one appointment 6 weeks postpartum for a physical “all-clear” for sex and exercise. Where is the mental health check-in for moms and or dads?
We provide a complimentary 20 minute mental health check-up via telehealth for parents within the first 12 weeks after birth. This appointment will consist of a mini-assessment of how you are coping with the addition of a new baby. Our goal is to make sure you know where to go if you’re not feeling like yourself, need extra support and/or connect you with additional resources you may need.
Perinatal PTSD & Traumatic Birth
The psychological toll of a traumatic birth can lead to emotional distress, and a form of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), that follows women into new motherhood. Your perception determines whether your birth was traumatic, not dependent on clinical staff or caregivers. If your childbirth didn’t go the way you expected, you may feel sad, numb, guilty, angry, powerless or a range of other emotions. If you are struggling after a distressing childbirth, please know that therapy can help you recover and heal emotionally.
Miscarriage & Loss
Losing a pregnancy or an infant can be one of the most emotionally devastating events a person can experience. You may have feelings of sadness, despair, guilt, anger, and disbelief. You may also feel isolated and alone. It can be difficult to talk about your loss, even with your partner. Whether your loss occurred early or late in your pregnancy, or during/after birth, your feelings are real and valid. Those feelings need to be expressed. We are here to help you process those feelings and work through your grief. We're also here to help you heal and begin to explore your options for moving forward.
Parenthood & Parent Support
The transition to parenthood impacts self-identify, relationships, and employment. It creates a new set of expectations, responsibilities, and role shifts. Although the addition of a new family member can result in much excitement, it also provides time for exploring the unknown, shifting schedules, sleeplessness, and oftentimes, chaos. Navigating these impactful shifts can sometimes result in feelings of anxiety, depression, resentment, guilt, and more. If adjusting to parenthood has been more challenging than you expected and you find yourself in need of more support, we can help.
